A sauna is passive: the heart rate rises to cool the body, but the muscles aren’t doing work, so the true metabolic cost stays in the light range. We bracket it at 1.5–2.5 MET and show the result as a range rather than a single false-precision number.

Why a range, not one number? Heart-rate-based estimates (including most fitness watches) overstate sauna calories, because heat pushes your pulse up far more than it pushes up your actual energy use. The MET method avoids that trap.

What the research actually measured

In the most-cited controlled measurement (Podstawski et al., 2019), 45 sedentary, overweight men in a dry sauna at 90–91 °C expended on average:

≈ 73 kcal  in the first 10-minute session, rising across repeated sessions.

Those figures run higher than a light-MET estimate for two reasons: the participants were heavier than average, and energy use measured under heat stress tends to read high. Treat single dramatic numbers — especially the “300–600 kcal per session” you see on product pages — with scepticism; they are not supported by independent, peer-reviewed measurement of a typical single session.

Who should be cautious or avoid the sauna

Sauna bathing is well tolerated by most healthy adults, but heat is a genuine cardiovascular and fluid stress. Seek medical advice before using a sauna if any of the following apply:

  • Pregnancy, especially the first trimester. Raising core temperature above ~38.9 °C (102 °F) has been linked to neural-tube defects; ACOG advises avoiding saunas and hot tubs in early pregnancy.
  • Unstable cardiovascular disease — recent heart attack, unstable angina, severe aortic stenosis, or poorly controlled heart failure or blood pressure.
  • Low blood pressure, fainting or dizziness, and many older adults — heat dilates blood vessels and can cause light-headedness on standing.
  • Alcohol before or during a sauna — this combination is dangerous and raises the risk of arrhythmia, dehydration and collapse.
  • Medications that impair sweating or blood-pressure control (e.g. some diuretics, beta-blockers, anticholinergics).

Stay hydrated, keep sessions moderate, and leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous or unwell. This tool does not assess whether a sauna is safe for you.

Do you actually burn calories in a sauna?

Yes, but modestly. Your heart rate climbs to cool the body, which uses a little extra energy — roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times your resting rate. That’s more than sitting on the couch, but far less than exercise, because your muscles aren’t doing any work.

How many calories do you burn in a sauna in 30 minutes?

Is sauna weight loss fat or water?

Sweat loss assumes 0.5–1.0 litres per hour, a typical thermoregulatory range. The walking comparison uses ≈3.5 MET for brisk walking. The fat reality-check uses 7,700 kcal per kilogram of body fat.

Sauna type. The selector adjusts the temperature context and the sweat estimate, but the calorie range is held the same across types, because peer-reviewed data do not reliably show one type burns more energy than another. We won’t invent a difference the evidence doesn’t support.

Important limits. The Compendium of Physical Activities was built for population research, not to give an exact individual energy cost, and it has no dedicated code for sauna bathing. Real values vary widely with body size, fitness, hydration, temperature and acclimatisation. Use this as an educational reference, not a precise measurement.

People often assume one type of sauna melts more calories than another. The honest answer is that the evidence doesn’t support a reliable difference — so our calculator keeps the calorie range the same across types and only changes the temperature context and the sweat estimate.

Do infrared saunas burn more calories?

No. Infrared rooms run at lower air temperatures (around 45–65 °C) but warm the body directly, and there is no robust peer-reviewed evidence that they burn meaningfully more energy than a traditional sauna. What matters for calorie burn is the rise in your core temperature and heart rate, not the marketing label on the cabin.

Is a steam room better than a sauna for calories?

A steam room is cooler (around 40–50 °C) but almost fully humid, so sweat can’t evaporate to cool you and it can feel more intense. That may raise your heart rate and sweat output, but it does not translate into a meaningfully different, well-evidenced calorie figure. Treat any precise type-by-type calorie comparison as marketing, not science.
